Motivation Is Key
We all know what motivation means but a lot of us do not know how to nurture it and to keep it and reinforce it. So today I am going to talk about just that. This is the complete beginner’s guide to motivation.
Just A Feeling
Motivation is ultimately just a feeling and feelings can be changed instantly. I am going to share with you on 4 scientifically proven techniques that will make you superhuman so get that superman cape ready!
The basis for all success is not skill, talent, genetics and it’s not what school you want to but it is action. The ability to influence action in yourself is the closest thing to a magic bullet when it comes to success.
What causes you to take action? Motivation! How do we get motivation? By following the 4 methods that I talk about in today’s blog post.
How To Find Motivation and Drive
Firstly you need to have a goal or goals. The number one reason why we do anything is what we will get in return; our reward. Whether this is joy, more money, freedom, losing weight there is always a reason to why we do anything.
What is the reason you want to change? To lose weight? Help People? Whatever it is the reward is a great motivation and especially if it is a life-changing one. So take time now to find what your goal or reward is. Why do you want this to be successful?
The tricky thing is though keeping the motivation going. I guarantee most people will have given up after about a month. The motivation for your reward/goal is dwindling so the action reduces and you give up. It’s the same cycle over and over again. So how do you solve this?
The Complete Beginners Guide To Motivation
Today’s blog post is going to give you 4 scientifically proven methods of what to do, how to do it and when to do it. I am also going to write about how to change limiting beliefs and the impact they have on motivation.
The Four Methods Of Motivational Success
Creative Visualisation Model
This model works through conscious reinforcement of the rewards you’ll get. You have to use your creativity to visualise yourself enjoying and doing your rewards. It is like a conscious daydream that completely changes your mood and state.
How Do I Do This?
Every day I want you to wake up 5 minutes earlier and do a creative visualisation (CV) session and also before going to sleep. It won’t take more than 5 minutes but I emphasise you really have to do it until it becomes second nature every day. You have to envision yourself doing whatever it is you want out of having success in the area you want. For an example, we will use the area of weight loss.
- Imagine yourself stood in front of a full-length mirror
- See how great you look
- Imagine what you are wearing and see how fantastic it looks on you.
- The clothes fit in all the right places and not digging in anywhere.
- Look at your face. You look so much happier and confident.
- You feel incredible
- Now turn this image into full-on colour, nice and bright
- Now step into that image and see how good that feels
- This is you and this is your goal and this is your reward.
Use Your 5 Senses
The trick is to feel like you are there completely. Try and be as specific as you can be and use your 5 senses. Your brain can not tell the difference from thought to reality. Imagine you have just had a nightmare you wake up and you are sweating, your body is trembling – this is from a thought, not a physical reality.
21 Day Challenge
If you think all this is useless try it. Do a 21-day challenge, 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night time every day for 21 days and then see how you feel. If you don’t feel any different after 21 days then stop it but I guarantee if you do it and do it properly the changes will be significant.
A lot of top sportsmen and women use this technique. In fact, if you go onto Youtube you will find Tiger Woods talking about the exact same thing so give it a watch.
Peer Group Model
Another key to motivation and to maintaining it is to associate yourself with like-minded people. For example, join online forums in the area you are concentrating on and also Facebook groups etc.
In the book “The Power of Habit: Why we do what we do in life and business” they state that “when people join groups where change seems possible the potential for that change to occur becomes more real”.
Reduce your association with anything or anyone that takes you away from your goal and associate with things which help you. You need to be able to ask or seek advice from people in similar positions to yourself. You can then keep each other motivated and inspire action.
According to research by Amabile, T. M. & Kramer in their research paper, “What really motivates workers of all the events that occur at work”, the event having the most prominent positive effect on emotions, perceptions, and motivation is simply making progress in meaningful work.
The first key is to find meaning in your work. With me and my blog for example, if what I blog on brings me joy or has meaning to me and I make progress, then this leads to motivation and to carry on. My blog to me has meaning in the fact that it helps people change their lives. It’s articles and categories that help people with productivity, motivation, self-growth, spirituality and mindfulness. This, therefore, brings meaning to my work and I enjoy it.
So the more I write detailed, value-filled articles, the more I want to keep doing it. This motivates me to improve my blog and make it even better.
So, in essence, the more I blog the more I will keep wanting to do it. But this is only true if I write articles that I am proud of and then I will see my level of motivation and drive increase. So you can see how these techniques work with every situation whether it is me writing my blog, or you losing weight and getting healthier.
Recent research on the benefits of meditation has exploded across the western world.
The benefit of happiness and a reduction in stress and anxiety apart from it feeling good, has a direct impact on the work that you do. We become more successful when we are happier and less stressed.
The impact of a simple 10-minute meditation session every day is absolutely profound. Such a simple act can literally change your life.
YouTube has lots of teaching guides on mediation which are free. You can also get some great apps the ones I have on my phone are Calm, Timeless, Headspace. I also have a selection of Paul McKenna’s hypnosis sessions and an Oprah and Deepak 21 day meditation experience app. So you can see there are lots out there and most are free.
You don’t have to jump straight in and do 10 minutes if you don’t want to. You can always start with 2 minutes, then 5 minutes until you get to 10 minutes.
Find reward/goals in what you do and reaffirm through creative visualisation.
Associate with a peer group of like-minded individuals.
Making progress improves motivation
Meditation increases focus, attention and happiness and reduces anxiety and stress.
How To Change Limiting Beliefs
Your level of success in whatever you do has a lot to do with your beliefs. Beliefs are simply your perspective of the world. Your opinion. They are just your perspective of how things are shaped by experiences stemming all the way from your childhood.
You may have grown up with people telling you how smart you are, how well you do things and you grow up thinking you are intelligent. Every time you have an argument you have to win it. you can’t let it go due to your belief that you are so intelligent so you have to win the argument. This obviously causes relationship issues.
Maybe you grew up poor and your parents always said things like “money is the root of all evil” and “money is not that important, it’s just money”. These are then conditioned into your subconscious and you will grow up believing these as facts. The TRUTH is NOT your BELIEF. Money is not evil, it is simply a tool of exchange and how people use it is up to them.
Changing beliefs is not all that hard, it is actually simple but it just takes time and persistence.
“Your attempt may fail but never fail to make an attempt and choose to accept not to accept the false boundaries and limitations created by the past”
The Power Of Belief
The story of the captive elephant – I read a story recently about an elephant. A very large beg and strong elephant tied to a post by a thick rope around one leg. Now there were two blokes stood there and one of them couldn’t understand why the elephant hadn’t tried to escape. The other guy there turned to him and explained that the elephant believes he can’t escape. When he was a baby elephant the very same rope was used around his leg and at that point he wasn’t strong enough to escape. Therefore, he grew up believing that he could not break free.
Now I know you are not an elephant but you can see how beliefs affect our situations and our progress and success. So don’t let past conditioning stop you being successful today.
We don’t question our beliefs because we believe them to be true. You can not un-condition yourself from old beliefs but you can replace them with more empowering and positive beliefs. The same as if you have a broken mirror you don’t mend it you get a new one.
The more you take action the better and easier your goals will be. Take action to become an expert, read, study and learn. Read everything you can and then take action to become more knowledgeable; read success stories.
Deeply Rooted Negative Beliefs
To tackle a deeply rooted negative belief in your subconscious you must do something that will get down to your subconscious. This takes us back to creative visualisation. Daily visualisation has been proved to retrain your mind for success.
So apart from giving you more drive and motivation creative visualisation can rewrite previous negative beliefs and self-talk and completely replace it with more empowering ones.
What a belief really is is just a thought that you keep on repeating. So just stop repeating that thought to yourself replace that thought with a new better thought.
So how do you stop repeating this thought? Replace it! Repeat another thought and use creative visualisation to give yourself a new thought and image and do it every day to reaffirm that thought into your subconscious so it forms a new belief.
I can’t reiterate enough how important it is to do this every single day as you need to rewire your brain. Just doing it every now and then just isn’t going to do anything. You need to do it at least 30 days in a row before that belief starts to take traction. It is only 5 minutes twice a day so quick and easy but the rewards are immense. Make it as naturals as cleaning your teeth. Just reading this blog post and listening to the podcast isn’t enough you have to put the effort in to make it work. I think we can all take 10 minutes a day to do this.
As you can see there are 4 different parts of the cycle:
- POTENTIAL – What you can do (it’s always more than you think too)
- ACTION – What you achieved from your action
- RESULTS – What you achieved from your action
- BELIEF – What you think you can do
When people decide to take action, what’s blocking them from achieving the success they want is their lack of belief.
The level of belief you have determines how much potential you tap into. The amount of potential you tap determines the results you get and the results you get then determines how much belief you have in yourself. They all loop together.
Now let us look at Bob and Bill, they are both bloggers but Bob has loads of confidence and self-belief, supportive parents, puts effort into everything, had a great childhood, and aims for the stars. As a consequence, he believes he can achieve 100k views on his blog per month. He is more motivated, reads more traffic generation guides and programmes, studies harder, applies different strategies to see which works when things aren’t working.
Now Bill had a tough childhood, his parents had negative beliefs and values, he has become lazy and doesn’t believe in himself. As a consequence, he believes he can achieve 100 viewers a month on his blog. He is less motivated, reads just enough until he gets bored and then does something else, applies just one strategy and hopes that it works, complains and blames the world when things don’t work out.
Can you see the difference?
You need to find in yourself the negative beliefs and self-talk that you have about being successful in the area you want to concentrate on i.e. losing weight etc.
Use creative visualisation daily to see yourself in your ideal scenario.
After some time you will notice a slight shift in your motivation, the actions you take and the success that follows.
So as you can see motivation has a lot to do with belief.
Try this for yourself and then see the evidence for yourself.
