Time To Put Pen To Paper
Poems Needed For Book – Mental Health Awareness – I am currently putting together a book which is a collection of poems. The book’s main purpose is to raise awareness of mental health issues in the UK.
The poetry is written by people who have suffered with or who are suffering from a variety of mental health issues. (There are so many illnesses under the mental health umbrella, i.e. depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, postnatal depression, panic attacks, SAD etc).
I would also like to receive poems from the people who have loved ones and friends suffering from any of these issues.
Poems Needed For Book – Mental Health Awareness
I desperately need more poems to be donated to this important cause. You do not have to be a fantastic poet; this is not a poetry competition. It is purely a way to have your voice heard and be listened to while raising awareness at the same time. These poems are from the heart and that is important.
I started writing seriously last year and found it extremely cathartic but also very enjoyable. It is something I always wanted to do but I never thought I was good enough. However, I was wrong because the words I wrote moved people. I am certainly not saying I’m the best poet around; anything but! However, I am still very proud of the poems I wrote and I want you to be proud too but of your own work. The first poetry book I wrote I called, “Why Rainbows May Cry” and was about love and loss. Something I think a lot of people can relate to.
Help Me Get Rid Of The Stigma
It is so extremely important for people to listen and to realise that mental health conditions like the ones I have mentioned are nothing to be ashamed of; they are illnesses just like any other. The stigma needs to be gotten rid of and with the help of Princes Harry, William and of course Katherine the Heads Together campaign is helping with this. But your help is just as important if not more so.
Suicide Facts and Figures
You may not be aware of this but at least 16 people commit suicide in the UK each and every day. Let that sink in for a moment. We are talking 6000+ a year take their own lives. Try and use your imagination now. Imagine yourself stood in a large field, in front of you there are 6000 pairs of empty shoes… Quite powerful isn’t it.
Sadly towards the end of last year, two men in my hometown committed suicide in the same month. One threw himself in front of a train and the other young man jumped off a cliff! The impact this has on people is immeasurable.
I set up an online support group for people suffering from mental health issues approximately 3 years ago. It has gone from strength to strength. They are a fantastic group of people who support each other. Their empathy and compassion never ceases to amaze me. Some of the guys from the group have donated a poem which I am so over the moon about.
Getting It Published
I know I can self-publish online and I will if that is what I have to do but I would like to publish this as a hardback. Importantly, I want to give these poems and the people who wrote them with the respect that they deserve. Also, I want people to take this seriously. I want to give these people a voice. Furthermore, I would like to get it published in time for the World Mental Health Awareness Day, on 10 October 2018.
I have set up a gofundme page. However, I am hoping that a publisher will take this project on board so that will not be needed.
I would like to thank you for reading this post and urge you to put pen to paper and send a poem. I would also be grateful if you could perhaps share this important story. It would be fantastic if we could get this post, Poems Needed For Book – Mental Health Awareness’ trending and circulated.
In the meantime, you can send your poems to me here at firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for your time and thank you for your poems.
