Get Yourself In A Happy Place
Over the past couple of months, it’s occurred to me just how important being creative is to me. Finding something creative that you can do on a daily basis can help you zone out into the special place; almost like meditation. It calms the mind down and stops my cravings for binge eating. Because of this, I thought I would share ways of how to be more creative and how mindfulness and creativity can have a very positive effect on your body and mind.
Do You Comfort Eat?
If you have bad habits with regards to grazing on food on a night time or comfort eating in general try and do something else with your hands. I started to do this and was amazed by the results. Not only do you get rid of the guilty feelings of eating rubbish it has a deeply relaxing effect on you. Afterwards, I have a sense of calmness and genuinely feel more contented and then do not have that urge to eat everything in sight. Mindfulness and creativity has helped me enormously.
Adult Colouring Books
The adult colouring books you can get now are amazing. Some of them are just beautiful but the popularity is increasing every day so I guarantee that you will be able to find one with a theme you would like. Get yourself some beautiful coloured felt tips, gel pens, pencils, the choice is yours but there is something so gratifying in filling in an outline with beautiful colours. You can just zone out and the only decision you have to make is what colour to use next. I completely chill out while doing this and it also keeps your fingers moving. I have started to get arthritis in one of my fingers on my right hand so it is important for me to keep my fingers working.
If you have a spare table get yourself a beautiful jigsaw. I know a lot of people probably haven’t had a go at a jigsaw since their kids were small. As a child, I just loved jigsaws and haven’t done one in years. After I finish writing this post I am going to be ordering myself one. However, I do not have a spare table but I have seen a jigsaw accessory which is a large mat that rolls up and keeps all your pieces safe. After reading recently “The 4 Pillar Plan” by Dr Rangan Chatterjee I think this would be a good thing to do one hour before going to bed and turn off all electric devices.
I used to read so much but haven’t for a long time. It is difficult with concentration levels due to my fibromyalgia but I have found recently after changing my eating habits my concentration levels are starting to rise. Because of this, I’m quite excited at the prospect of getting back into reading. Even if its 15 minutes a day; that’s 15 minutes well spent in my eyes.
To the people who know me and know my blog you already know about the importance of writing to me. I find it extremely cathartic. I’m not saying you have to publish a book; far from it. One thing I suggest is a gratitude diary. When sitting in bed at night before you turn off your light just think about the kind of day you have had and just jot down some positive things you have experienced throughout the day.
Now sewing is a new one on me but I have found it to be so deeply relaxing. The past couple of nights I have been upcycling another old t-shirt of mine. I have been using words in my art for such a long time now so it seems to be a fantastic and natural transition for me to go from paper or canvas to fabric. I’ve been enjoying it that much I am very seriously considering selling these as walking works of art.
I have sewn some slogans and quotes on mine with stars. In red, it says “We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like”. In blue, “Life is short so smile while you still have teeth”. Finally in yellow, “I think my problem is that I have really fantastic bad ideas”.
Give It A Go
Give mindfulness and creativity a go. I know a lot of people think they don’t have a creative bone in their body but I say you do but you just need to find something that suits you. You don’t have to have an amazing looking finished product what is important is the process of doing it. If it looks fab then great; but equally if you feel calmer for doing it, enjoyed the process of doing; then carry on doing it.
Please let me know how you get one with any of the above or share with everyone what it is that you do to get to that happy place. Mindfulness and creativity rocks!
