This Time Next Year
Well, tonight sees the return of the successful ITV’s This Time Next Year. Tonight’s episodes kick off with weight loss stories and I’m talking about dramatic weight loss by following a VLCD – a very low-calorie diet. Now I know all about these. Why do you say that I hear you ask? Well, this time last year I too was placed inside a house with 4 complete strangers and put on a very low-calorie diet of 800 calories a day for an ITV documentary; I know exactly what these guys went through.

You Need To Change Your Mindset
I grew up in the 80s where we were told that meal replacements don’t work. Well, the tables have turned and I can assure you that they do work. There are many reasons for this. One is definitely the ease of use as in you have nothing to weigh, no points, no syns, etc. All I had to measure was 300ml of water into my shaker beaker but you only need to do that once. Put a line with a permanent marker where you need to fill to and that’s it. No counting calories or fat content etc as it is all done for you.
One of the great things about going on a VLCD – very low-calorie diet is that you tend to lose weight very quickly and this acts as a great incentive because you start to see results pretty much by the end of the first week. This seriously keeps you motivated. I found that with Weight Watchers and Slimming World I lost it very very slowly and would lose interest by week 3. I felt I was doing loads of hard work and getting nothing back. Also, I was told I could eat loads of carbs which is ridiculous. I can’t eat carbs my body doesn’t tolerate them which is why I became type 2 diabetic.
Change Your Diet
You need to think of this as a lifestyle change. Once you have lost your weight you can’t go back to what you eating before so use this time wisely. Read up on healthy diets and get that knowledge so when it is time to wean yourself off the VLCD you know exactly what you are eating and why. I can honestly say hand on heart I now no longer eat potatoes, pasta, rice or bread. Before my Fast Fix I lived on this stuff. I would get through a whole French stick in a day, a massive bowl of porridge for breakfast, a huge bowl of cereal for supper and a large main meal at night. Talk about carb overload no wonder my body was struggling and giving up.
I really thought that I would miss these starchy carby things but I don’t at all. My daughter and I now have cauliflower mash instead of potatoes, courgetti instead of spaghetti and cauliflower rice instead of basmati. I went from having white coffee with 2 sugars to black coffee with no sugar. The thought of white coffee and sugar makes me feel sick now. So take it from me your tastes will change and lots.
Diet Meal Replacement Shakes
Now as I briefly mentioned I used to hate these types of drinks. I had tried about 3 years previously having a protein drink/shake and had two mouthfuls and started gipping. Now I can’t wait to get that first shake of the day. I will warn you now it will taste so much better with fridge cold water. If you don’t have room in your fridge for water you can put some ice cubes in the blender. It makes all the difference believe me. Don’t give up either. The first day was hell I hated them. By the end of the week I was loving it.

It is not just a case of changing your eating habits you need to look at why you eat the things you do, when you eat the things you do and why. This book addresses the whole thing. It will give you a lot of food for thought and also talks about ketosis and the importance of this with regards to removing the fat from your internal organs, around your organs and under the skin (ectopic, visceral and subcutaneous). I knew nothing about these things before my journey and I seriously had my eyes opened.
There is also a to go alongside the book which also has a selection of tables, and charts to fill in along the way. It has been proven that by recording inches lost etc you are more likely to stick to your diet. Also it is a fantastic thing to look back on because you will have the occasional week where you lose inches and not pounds but if you read back through your journal you’ll be glad you had it believe me. It keeps you going. I lost over 30lbs and 58 inches from around my body.
