Time To Think About Coping Strategies
I have touched on this briefly already but today I am going to suggest several things that you can do to help. So today’s post is going to be about a few ways on how to cope with cravings when dieting.
First Things First
We are all different and we all struggle at different times of the day and for different reasons. Sometimes there are outside influences at play and sometimes it’s something inside of you. A good place to start is to list all the situations you struggle with during a typical day. Whether it is being more hungry at nighttimes, snacking while cooking your children’s dinner, munching on stuff while watching the TV.
My problems are night time snacking while watching the TV. I used to do it without thinking and quite easily polish off two snickers, a mars bar, crisps, french stick, cheese then wash it all down with pop or soda for my American readers. I would do this every night so to go from that to no snacking was a big change.
I used to also take my laptop upstairs at about 9 pm and watch a film in bed while sucking on a bag of sherbert lemons.
How To Cope With Cravings When Dieting
Look at your list and have a think about how you could help yourself change your ways with the things on it. Remember preparation for these times is key. You know the temptation will raise its ugly head so prepare yourself.
Every morning just set your alarm to wake you 5 minutes earlier than usual. What I want you to do is close your eyes (don’t fall asleep – might be worth hitting the snooze button just in case). At this point I want you to make a circle with your thumb and middle finger on each hand (this is important). and imagine yourself stood in front of a full-length mirror. You are stood there looking at a reflection of you when you reach your target weight. Imagine the image in full colour; look how good you look.
You’ve got that pair of jeans on that you wanted to fit into. You look fantastic and they fit in all the right places. Now have a good look; you can’t help but think you look so good finally. Think about how happy and confident and proud that makes you feel.
Now step into that image and actually feel how good that would be. It feels so good you are looking the best you have ever looked because you now have the thoughts of a slim person. You don’t need to snack anymore on things your body doesn’t need. You are proud of your body now and it doesn’t want or need these things anymore.
I want you to do this every morning. It will get easier the more you do it. When you have a moment during the day; when you feel an urge to snack put your fingers back into the circle position. Now take yourself quickly back to the mirror and wait for the craving to pass. When it passes have a drink of water then carry on with what you were doing. Eventually, you should find yourself having to do this less and less.
You can also do this visualsation before you fall asleep. Just keep putting that image of you in front of you and stepping into it.
Snacking In Bed
Now, this was one I was guilty of. I could get through a bag of sherbert lemons every night in bed while watching a film. I would just keep shovelling them in. To end this cycle I turned my bed into a laptop and film free zone. It felt weird at first but it worked.
When I went to bed it was to sleep and no film watching. The film watching moved downstairs. Instead, I started reading or listening to audiobooks in the bedroom. I found a fantastic site called Audible.
Audiobooks Are Fantastic
I knew about this site but had never got around to using it until recently. For those that don’t know it is a free app and with it, you get to own your audiobooks. Unlike other audiobook companies, your books are yours to keep, even if you cancel. Which is fantastic. You can listen to these whenever you want to. Walking the dog, in bed, driving, commuting and walking.
Stephen Fry lost shit loads of weight purely by walking and he put it down to listening to audiobooks. He would just walk and listen. Walking is free so it’s even better.
You can also swap an audiobook for any reason whenever you want. You get unlimited access to loads of free podcasts. Exclusive deals throughout the month which sometimes is 60% off books. You can listen to them online and offline which is great if you want to listen on a train, a plane or somewhere without a signal. When you join you get 30 days free trial which is fantastic.
It is what I did and I was so glad I did. But if it’s not your thing you can delete your account no problem.
What I also like is that it is not just fiction you can get numerous non-fiction books and some great self-help books. They literally have thousands to choose from. There is also always a great free book etc when you start but these incentives are always appealing and fresh in my eyes. It’s amazing how it distracts you from wanting food. I just lie back close my eyes and listen.
I’ve started doing it now too when walking the dog. Honestly give it a go and make the most of the free trial and see if it helps. I know it helps me. Click here to take you to the link.
Adult Colouring Books
If your problem is night time grazing while watching the TV or films on your sofa and audiobooks aren’t your thing. Have a go with adult colouring books. I absolutely love these things. It is a really good mindfulness habit to get into. There are some amazing books to choose from now which can be as detailed or not as you want them to be.
So many designs to choose from too. I am now on my third; one book will last you ages and it is so relaxing.
I find that about 5 minutes in the last thing on my mind is food. My head feels calm; I feel calm. It has such a huge mediative state on you I love it. In my opinion, the best felt tips to use are the brush tip type. You can also get double ended pens so one end is a thin nib and the other is a thicker or a brush type. The brush type saves time and effort with big areas. And even better you don’t have to be good at art to do them.
I get mine from either The Works or The Range. I find The Range has a lot more to choose from and cater to everyone’s budget. You can also use pencils it doesn’t have to be felt tips. You can also get complex dot-to-dots too for people that would prefer that. I noticed today that also have adult colouring books which are a paint by numbers style and some etch arts. I used to love to paint by numbers as a kid.

The thing I love about all of this is not only are you taking your mind of food and eating you are doing something highly enjoyable. You get to let out your inner child something I adore and I feel is something that we should never let go of. You are getting to play again and that is a fantastic feeling. Why not do both at the same time. Colour in and listen to your audiobook – a double whammy. Believe me, this is a huge coping strategy.
Something else I did while in The Fast Fix was I started embroidery. I hadn’t done it since being at school but I found it so relaxing. I ended up sewing bugs on anything and everything. It really is a good time to take up a new hobby.
So lose weight and celebrate your inner child at the same time and get playing.
I hope today’s post has given you something else to think about. I would love to hear about any ideas or coping strategies that you use yourself. So please feel free to leave a comment below or even subscribe by email so that you don’t miss out on posts and a newsletter which I will be doing shortly.
Have a fantastic weekend everyone.
