Ground Source Heat Pump Nightmare
Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggghhhhhh!! that is just 1% of what I am feeling right now. Harrogate Borough Council along with Ice Energy (now bankrupt – no surprise there) and Helplink installed a ground source heat pump approximately 2009. I was told that it would be a lot cheaper for me so of course, I agreed. That was the worst mistake of my life. Welcome to my ground source heat pump nightmare.
How is it Supposed to Work
This machine is supposed to use the heat from the ground to supply an efficient method of heating for your home and provide you with enough hot water. Since day one this stupid machine has not worked properly. They even resorted to drilling a second borehole which must have cost them a bloody fortune. It also left me with a water feature as they burst the mains water supply!
The council in their wisdom installed just over 300 of these systems into their houses. However, mine was one of a couple that was a completely different make and model to everyone else. This caused an extortionate amount of problems from day one because when things started to go wrong the engineers would come out and all they could do was scratch their heads because they had never seen one like mine before. This resulted in them contacting their base and finding someone who knew about it to come and visit then they would order parts or deal with it. This meant the issue was always a prolonged problem.
Eventually, they got to know the system but it is still not working properly. I have had various parts replaced throughout the years.
No Hot Water or Heating in Winter
Every winter since this machine has been installed I have suffered. Come October time when the temperature drops the heat pump cannot cope with the extra need and transfers to the emersion to try to compensate. However, the emersion when in use is equivalent to boiling a kettle constantly and you can imagine how much that costs. However, it still doesn’t provide the needs on the emersion.
Cost of Electricity Used
Scottish Power is telling me that I am using over £220 a month in electric which is absolutely ridiculous. I live in a 3 bedroom semi with my daughter part-time. And to add insult to injury I don’t even get hot water and heating for three months during the winter. We all huddle around a small fan heater which isn’t cheap to run.
I have a very small income and can not afford to pay this every month. The council are aware of this and are doing jack shit to help. I am now in communication with my local MP who is working on my behalf too.
What the F**k?
I overhead a conversation between one of the Helplink guys and the manufacturer over the telephone stating that this machine is not suitable for a 3-bed semi and more suitable for a bungalow. Funny… because this I have just imagined. Convenient that.
A Warrant Issued
Today I came back home from taking my car to the garage for its MOT to find Scottish Power with a warrant to fit an electric meter. In the back of my mind, I knew that this was a high possibility but was hoping the council would have done something to sort it by now. However, Mr. Simon Hobbs, who promised me that this would be dealt with this by the end of last year has failed in every way possible. He has probably sent me two emails max. He just does not reply and a waste of space along with his sidekick Mr. Woodhouse.
The situation has not changed and although Scottish Power are aware of my situation can do nothing to help me.
My extra problem as of today is that because I have a meter installed I will be in a position every month where I will possibly now have no electric.
As you can imagine I am not happy today. I have just again emailed Mr Simon “evasive” Hobbs and copied in Mr Jones MP demanding an answer from Harrogate Borough Council as to what they are going to do about this ongoing issue.
Unfortunately the ombudsman can not take over until I have confirmation from Harrogate Borough Council that they are not going to do anything else.
So… there you go.. I will be taking this further and I will be contacting Watchdog, and other organisations including the press. I can guarantee that I will not be the only one in the Harrogate Borough Council District that is suffering in this way. It is outragious. It is stress I really don’t need. Stress effects my fibromyalgia and causes more flare ups.
I will keep you updated as to what goes on with this moving forward. And any of you considering having one of these installed…. DON’T!
Harrogate is supposed to be one of the happiest places to live in this country. Can you believe that? Well, to be honest, it probably is but that is because every sodding person is on Prozac!
Harrogate Council you are a bunch of *****
