D Day… time for endoscopy so suppose I should say E Day. I had eaten nothing since 9pm last night as instructed by the hospital and nil by mouth when I got up. That morning my cup of coffee and rich tea biscuit was definitely missed.
Arrived at the hospital at the correct time 45 minutes before the procedure; a bag of nerves. All the staff I came into contact with were fantastic as usual. After a brief wait I was taken into an office to go through the paperwork; talking was difficult because my mouth was so dry – my tongue felt like it was stuck to the roof of my mouth, blood pressure, blood sugar etc were taken and had my lovely hospital bracelet attached.
Not long after I was taken into the treatment room and was asked to sit on the couch. The Doctor and nurses introduced themselves checked some details then sprayed my throat 5 times; the spray was the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted in my life. He asked me to swallow it then he did it again. Within no time at all my mouth tongue and throat had no feeling; they were completely numb. At this point I was asked to remove my glasses and lay down on my left side. An oxygen tube was placed inside my left nostril which was comfortable as it was encased in sponge then a plastic guard was placed in my mouth which I assume is to protect your teeth.
While the guard was being fastened I had a cannula inserted into the back of my right hand and was given some sedative or gin and tonic as my doctor told me. To be honest I do not remember much after that, I don’t remember feeling the tube going into my throat but I did hear the doctor say that he would not be able to finish the procedure as there was still food in my stomach. Nooooooooo was the first thought that went through my head. I will now have to go through the whole thing again in about a months time.
Reason for procedure
I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia about 5 years ago which gave me a lot of acid reflux which was the most awful thing. This acid reflux has been brilliantly managed by medication until about a year ago. For the past year I wake up choking on acid tasting vomit at least 4 times a week and then have to fall asleep sitting up. This has a knock on effect on my fibromyalgia which is a condition caused by lack of deep sleep. This past year has truly been a nightmare and I am so fed up. I just want it to go so although today is a horrible procedure I was kind of looking forward to it as I saw it as a step nearer to maybe getting rid of it for good.
Because I had sedation I had to be monitored until someone was able to take me home. I was allowed a drink and biscuit after an hour. I was very kindly given a sandwich and a couple more drinks before I left. As I said earlier the staff were fantastic and a big thank you to my lovely boyfriend Joseph who collected and looked after me until my children came home. I am not allowed to drive for 24 hours, sign legal documents and operate machinery. I am also not allowed to have my amitryptaline tonight (I usually have 4 to help me sleep) so will be interesting tonight to see what happens… if anything.
So for anyone out there who is waiting to have an endoscopy please please do not worry, the thought of it is so much worse than the actual thing. If you are asked I would definitely go for the throat spray and the gin and tonic :o)
ps. that first cuppa and biscuit is sent from heaven I swear
